Israel’s Shadow War on International Justice: Ten Years of Espionage and Intimidation
In a gripping exposé, +972 Magazine1, Local Call2, and The Guardian3 have unveiled a covert campaign by the Israeli government that has been in motion for the past decade. This clandestine operation targeted the International Criminal Court (ICC), employing surveillance, intimidation, and threats to undermine investigations into potential war crimes committed by Israel.
Behind the Veil: The Mechanics of Surveillance
The investigation reveals a world of espionage straight out of a spy thriller. Israeli operatives monitored the communications and movements of top ICC prosecutors. This included intercepting phone calls and emails and tracking their physical locations. The goal? To gather intelligence and stay one step ahead of the ICC’s probes into Israel's military actions.
Perhaps the most shocking aspect of the report is the alleged intimidation tactics used by Israeli agents. Prosecutors and their families received direct threats designed to instill fear and coerce them into abandoning their work. These threats were reportedly explicit and personal, evoking a sense of dread reminiscent of mafia operations. The impact on the ICC’s ability to carry out its mandate has been profound, raising serious concerns about the erosion of international legal norms.
For Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hardline coalition, these revelations present a severe moral and public relations challenge. The Israeli government’s overt disdain for international law, partly fueled by a perception that it has been unfairly weaponized against Israel, is now under global scrutiny. This stance, deeply rooted in historical grievances, complicates Israel’s position on the world stage.
The international community has reacted swiftly and decisively. Algeria has introduced a resolution at the United Nations Security Council calling for an immediate cessation of Israeli military actions in Gaza and adherence to international legal standards. France has also condemned the ongoing violence, with President Emmanuel Macron expressing outrage over the civilian casualties resulting from Israeli strikes.
The U.S. Veto: A Diplomatic Tightrope
The United States faces a diplomatic dilemma. Historically, the U.S. has shielded Israel from international censure at the UN using its veto power. However, the current situation forces the Biden administration to reconsider using its veto power. The decision to veto the resolution could isolate the U.S. further on the global stage.
Amid these developments, ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas are fraught with tension. CIA Director William Burns has been involved in mediating terms, yet Prime Minister Netanyahu remains hesitant to agree to a permanent ceasefire, viewing it as a potential strategic defeat. This internal discord reflects broader challenges within the Israeli government and its approach to the war on Gaza.
International Law at a Crossroads
This investigative report sheds light on a shadowy war against international justice. It highlights the lengths to which a state might go to shield itself from accountability, and the repercussions of such actions on global legal institutions. As the world watches, the balance between international law, and human rights hangs in a delicate equilibrium.

I am heartily tired of Israel getting a free pass because of past atrocities against them. I appreciate your bringing this information to light. Most any group of people has been persecuted by some other group in the past but that isn’t an endless excuse for them turning around and committing their own atrocities.
I include various actions by the United States in this, including our colonial actions against various countries and our military actions in Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan. We failed as a world leader when we didn’t join the ICC because we didn’t uphold our commitment to the rule of law in an international sense.
I am far from an expert on the Middle East but I read and I believe the US needs to take a much stronger stance about Israel’s actions in Gaza. I also realize this is a tightrope Biden needs to walk in an election year and that there are no easy answers. Thank you for adding to my understanding of the situation.
Thanks for posting, Oussama. It makes me wonder how else Israel and the USA are influencing global affairs.
